Minor and Custodian Accounts

Youth accounts are a good way to save money for the benefit of a minor and also to get a child interested and learning about money. We offer custodian and minor account options for both checking and savings accounts.

Custodian Accounts

Custodian accounts are a way to begin teaching minors responsible money habits, while maintaining control over the account. The custodian is responsible for managing and distributing the funds in this account on behalf of the minor.

  • Checking and savings account options
  • No fees
  • No maximum balance or contribution limits
  • Free enrollment in the Coindexter Club for children ages 5 through 12
  • Takes only $1.00 to open a savings account (and we'll give you the dollar)
  • Free Visa debit card option with checking accounts (debit card will be in the custodian's name)
  • Lifetime benefits of a credit union membership

The custodian can turn over account access to the minor at age 18 or 21. To open a custodian account, please visit one of our branch locations or call us at 703-706-5000 or 800-296-8882.

Minor Accounts

This is a youth account that gives a child more control over their account than a custodian account.

  • Minor has control over their money and will receive statements and have access to online banking
  • Checking and savings account options
  • Free Visa Debit Card option with checking accounts (debit card will be in minor's name)
  • No maximum balance or contribution limits
  • Overdraft protection
  • Takes only $1.00 to open a savings account (and we'll give you the dollar)
  • Lifetime benefits of a credit union membership

As long as the minor can sign his or her own name, they can open a minor account. It also requires the signature of someone over 18. To open a minor account, please visit one of our branch locations or call us at 703-706-5000 or 800-296-8882.
